TVoholic’s review of What They Saw

Here’s a review from our friends at TVoholic.com :

Life(S01E04) Okay so there are many new shows this season, some I knew were gonna be bad, some I was disappointed a little but didn’t have that many hopes or expectations, others I do feel disappointed by, and of course some I have happy to see they’re as good if not better as I had hoped.

So far I can tell you this, despite it flaws Life is without question the best new NBC series this year, and one the the best new series overall. I know to some i might just be yet another cop drama with a “twist”, but it really is so more than that. There’s more to it, starting with obviously Charlie Crews, who is and makes the show.

Although I’ll be honest with you, his partner Reese is growing on me every day a little more, just as Charlie is obviously growing on her. As he even pointed out, despite her denial, she did refer to him as her partner. I highly doubt she would have called him that when they started together, and that was a much more valid proof and the evolution of their relationship than the “lying for him” bit was a few episodes ago.

You really see she’s opening to him and his attitude, and respecting Crews as a “real” cop, not just one who got his badge because of a court order but who doesn’t really deserve to be there, through such little things. Like her calling him partner, or how she took away his knife last week, how she went along right away to not let Easley - the homeless suspect on their investigation - locked up in jail, or simply the way she reacted a bit later on the car, with both Charlie and Easley.

It almost looked as if she was a mother figure trying to educate her kids, and it does apply as both have lost touch with reality in their own ways. Easley lives in his own world, stealing finding stuff, not talking to anyone for months or years. Charlie, he might be back in the world but not so long ago he felt the same, and did not spoke to anyone for a long time as well.

Emmy Awards: Top 10 Drama Series Finalists

While waiting for the nominations, the Emmys have released the lists of top 10 finalists for best comedy and drama series. Sadly, LIFE isn’t on the list. So that one we won’t get, but there’s still hope in the acting categories.

Apparently, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences planned to release the top 10 lists in the acting categories as well, but it’s temporarily on hold while the Academy chiefs survey the industry response to this unprecedented release of the program top 10s. Let’s hope they do, and more importantly that Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi made it!

For info, here’s the top 10 :

BOSTON LEGAL
DAMAGES
DEXTER
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
GREY’S ANATOMY
HOUSE
LOST
MAD MEN
THE TUDORS

Adam Arkin talks LIFE

LIFE: Adam Arkin, Damian Lewis, Sarah ShahiOkay so it’s not a recent interview, but who cares!

Back in April, Adam Arkin was interviewed by Comedy Centric, and of course at some point it was question of his most recent work, on LIFE. It’s short, but good.

He makes a point to praise Sarah Shahi, and as anyone who’s watch the show it’s easy to see why, and also talks about the move to Fridays, deciding to do as me and see only the better part of the news (that LIFE is back for another season), and that since the network (probably) has lower expectations than they’d have for a show on any other night, it might be a chance for LIFE to grow there for a while, a long while.

Hey, after all CBS put NUMB3RS on that exact same slot, Fridays at 10pm, and it’s been doing pretty well for some time now…

Expect some product placements on LIFE next season

This won’t be a news to anyone who’s actually watching shows on NBC, they love product placement. One might even say they love it a little too much, as they’re now almost going to work with advertisers first, and writers/producers later. Not really a good sign of things to come if you ask me, or if you’ve watch that episode of HEROES last season, you know, the one about the Nissan ?

Anyways, for next season we can expect LIFE to be in on the new product placement trend. Not that the first season was free of it, just asked Brian Daly, senior VP with Team Detroit, a Ford advertising agency : “Lewis plays a cop who spends a lot of time in his car, it’s practically his office. I sent a 2008 Ford Taurus over for an audition and they loved it. The character is young and the car is brand new. Plus, from a practical point-of-view it’s large enough to accommodate cameras for interior shots.

I’m not sure about this whole “it’s practically his office” statement, but whatever floats their boat I guess.

Casting tidbits

Just before, with the TV Guide article, we mention some casting news. So I though this was a good occasion to add a couple more things, keeping everything hidden of course for those who don’t want to be spoiled.

TV Guide article

A mention of LIFE in a recent TV Guide, but be aware if you’re allergic to spoilers, there are some little bits of information about what to expect from season two. No details, nothing precise, but some major indications of things to come. You’ve been warned.

(Reese and Crews are sitting outside, discussing the case. He is eating a caramel apple as they talk.)
Reese: Manny says Stylman did it. Stylman says Manny wasn’t even in the car. Manny is a career criminal, and Stylman…
Crews: Is a good family man. Or at least, he was. Up until three days ago, Stylman was a good husband, a good father. What happened in that car that he won’t tell us ? That he can’t tell us ? We have to use his own strength against him.
Reese: Strength ? What’s his strength ?
Crews: His weakness.
Reese: His weakness is his strength ?
Crews: Exactly. It’s like the one-handed clap.
Reese: Are you really Zen ?
Crews: I’m Zen-ish. (About his half-eaten caramel apple:) You want in on this ? — S01E03
