(Crews is investigating into the woods, sees someone up in a tree.) Crews: LAPD, show me your hands ! (Easley throws stuff at him.) Crews: Hey! Cannot see the gun ? (He keeps throwing stuff at him.) Crews: What you got up there, CostCo ?? Cut it out! Now get down here or I'm coming up after you... (He climbs higher in the tree.) Crews: Oh please... (As Crews jumps into the tree:) I just bought this suit! (After getting him down there, Crews puts handcuff on him as Reese and other cops arrive on scene.) Crews: Don't throw stuff at the LAPD. You're lucky I'm enlightened! Reese: Well I'm not as enlightened as my partner! (Pushes Easley against the tree.) Crews: He was hiding down here. I identified myself, he threw a toaster at me ! Reese: Throwing toasters at the LAPD is bad. Makes you look like you're guilty of something. Are you? Got anything in your pockets that'll stick me ? (She searches his pockets and finds the victim's wedding ring.) Look at this! You got a dead man's wedding ring in your pocket, did you know that ? You're under arrest for the murder of Len Sands. Take him away. Crews: You just called me your partner. Reese: When ? Crews: Just now. Reese: No, I didn't. Crews: Yeah, you did. Reese: No! I never said that. Crews: (Turns to a cop nearby:) You heard her, didn't you?
(Reese and Crews are interrogating Easley. Reese talks, Easley stays silent. When Crews starts scratching his back, he suddenly shouts:) Easley: Baby powder! For the poison ivy you've got. You ran through it on the hill. I know to avoid it, but you must've not seen it. Really'd like to get out of here, I don't like it inside so much. Crews: Can't breathe in here ? Easley: Yeah that's right, how did you know ? Reese: Why are you shouting ? Easley: Am I !? It's been so long since I talk to anybody, my voice... Crews: (Cuts him:) ..sounds weird. Easley: Yeah that's right! Crews: Like someone else, whispering into your hear ? Easley: How did you know ? Crews: (Smiles.) What's your name ? Easley: Holt Easley. And I'm 61 years old. Reese: You've ever been arrested ? Easley: Not for nothing like murder. I don't think I ever even picked up a felony... Reese: Alright, why were you in the backyard ? Easley: I live there. It's better than shelters. I never been in the house though! Reese: How come you had the victim's ring in your pocket ? Easley: I found it! I did, I swear. Swear to God ! Crews: What were you trying to get away from ? Easley: If I say, can I go ? Reese: No! Easley: Can I get a drink ? Reese: No! But if you confess, we won't charge you with murder one, or for assaulting Detective Crews. Crews: Or for stealing Detective Reese's pen. (Reese starts looking for her pen, realizing it is missing. Easley gets up, takes it out from his pants and gives it back.)
(Walking away from the interrogation room, Reese holds out her pen by only a couple of fingers, handing it to Crews.) Reese: Here. Take it. (Crews takes the pen.) Anything that goes down his pants, you keep. Crews: So what do you think ? Reese: Well, I think he's lying. I know he's a drunk and a thief. Crews: Or a non-conformist, a Western archetype, cowboy on the range... Reese: You actually believe the crap you say ? Crews: It's not important what I believe. It's important what he believes. You give a flower sun, it opens up. You give a man respect, same thing. Reese: You think you're working him ? He's working you. Drunks are great at telling you what you want to hear. (Walks in the elevator.) Now you think he's innocent.
