Quotes from Pilot: Merit Badge

As we all know, LIFE is a show filled with words just waiting to be extracted and turned into quotes. Sometimes it’s a Zen comment, sometimes it’s just Charlie being Charlie, sometimes it’s Dani, and the way she interacts with Crews - there are plenty of great lines in this show, so much you’d want to put the entire episode here.

But a selection had to be made, and here are some of my favorite quotes from this episode :

Reese: Detective Crews ? Detective Crews ? You are Detective Crews, aren’t you ?
Crews: Yeah, I guess I am.
Reese: Okay, well would you like to be sure, because we’re about to walk in to a crime scene.
Crews: I’m sure.
Reese: (Walking away from him, sarcastically) Great.
Crews: (Hurrying after her) Are you Reese ?
Reese: Detective Reese!

Crews: The dog must have took a bullet for the kid, then took the shooter’s finger off. Anyone ever loved you that much ?

Crews: So, you wanna have the talk ?
Reese: Which talk is that ?
Crews: About how you didn’t want me as your partner and you’re looking to transfer out as soon as you can.
Reese: Nope, I don’t wanna have that talk.
Crews: You wanna have the talk about what you did ? Who you pissed off to get partnered up with me ?
Reese: I was handed a slip of paper, it said you were my new partner, it didn’t mention why, and I didn’t ask.
Crews: Getting stuck with me isn’t exactly a promotion for you.
Reese: Detective, it might be a habit of yours, but I don’t want to have the “What are you in for ?” talk, either.
Crews: Not a big talker. See, I’ve learned something about you already.

Crews: Oh, okay, okay you’re mad at me.
Reese: Mad, no I’m not mad. I mean I don’t even think there is a word for what I am. What you did to that husband, I kinda get, okay. I mean I guess I kinda get, but what you said to that wife…
Crews: I know. That one was me. It was my fault, I take responsibility. I wasn’t in the moment. If I’d stayed in the moment, if I’d stayed present, I would have been okay, but I didn’t. I was thinking about where we’re going next. So I left the moment just when I should have been completely in the moment, which is when people usually leave the moment, because the moment is just too much for. The moment is pretty much always too much, you know. I was thinking about where we’re gonna go next…

Crews: Anger ruins joy, steals the goodness of my mind, forces my mouth to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, leads to a mind without regrets. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.
Guard: Are you making fun of us ?
Crews: It is the universe that makes fun of us all.
(Crews and Reese leave.)
Reese: Why exactly would the universe make fun of us all ?
Crews: Maybe it’s insecure.

Crews: I’m not attached to this car. I’m not attached to this car. I’m just a little attached to this car.

(Crews puts the light on his roof, pulls a car over and approaches the driver.)
Driver: So what is it this time?
Crews: License and registration.
Driver: You know damn well who I am.
Crews: License and registration please.
Driver: Look, I married your ex-wife, that is not a crime.
(Hands Crews his license and registration.)
Crews: Were you aware that you changed lanes back there without signaling ?
(Crews begins writing a ticket.)
Driver: You have nothing better to do ?
Crews: No sir. Not at this moment.

(Charlie bites into a pear.) Aw, mushy! (Spits and throw away the bites into another one.) That’s the one. Green anjou! You know some people are allergic to pears ? Gives them a rash. Not me though… (Takes another bite)

Crews: Reese, I guess what I want to say is, you probably had to fight. Being a woman in the department, had to fight a lot, right? Fight for everything you ever got…
Reese: Detective Crews, this is not the place for that discussion. Detective Crews!
Crews: I just wanted to say…
Reese: Crews!
Crews: I just wanted to let you know…
Reese: Step back.
Crews: …you don’t have to fight with me.
Reese: Step back!
Crews: She thinks I’m gonna hug her. You think I’m gonna hug you ! I’m… (hugs Reese) As I hug my partner I know she is real, I mindfully meet this person with open arms, and an open heart.
(Reese eventually pushes him away.)
Crews: I’m not going to fight with you. I won’t.

Bobby: Hey, can I get a picture ? You know, on account of you being a celebrity detective and all ?
Crews: That’s a phone, Bobby.
Juarez: It’s got a camera in it. Where have you been ?
Crews: Me? I’ve been in federal maximum security prison.

Crews: Hey Ted! The orange grove deal includes the tractor, right? The big red one ?
Ted: Yes Charlie, it includes the big red tractor…

Crews: You know we have to see her.
Reese: Because it went so well last time ?
Crews: I’ll be better this time.
Reese: You’re not gonna talk this time!
Crews: That’s what I mean by “better.”
Reese: Look, I know the deal with your ex-wife, all right, it’s no secret, so just tell me that we’re gonna go see Alyssa Gibney because of the case, and not because of something that you’re working through.
Crews: I’m working through the case.

Gibney: My husband told me about you. A cop, in jail, all those years! How did you go on living ? How did you get past it ?
Crews: Well, I can tell you you’re already past it. I can tell you this moment is your life. I can tell you you have a husband and child who need you. But none of that means anything, does it?
Gibney: So tell me something that means something. Tell me anything, that means something!
Crews: The man who killed your son is out there, right now, inside this same moment that we are in. As we sit here, as I look at you, the man who killed John is free. Now that means something, doesn’t it? (She nods.)

Crews: I’m fighting crime!

Reese: I don’t exactly understand you.
Crews: You don’t have to understand here to be here.
Reese: That’s what I don’t understand.

Crews: My father is getting re-married to an eight year old, because my mother is dead. My mother is dead because he killed her. He killed her when he wouldn’t let her come see me.
Griffiths: No Zen for daddy ?
Crews: No Zen for daddy.

(A voice from the car announces: “Call from: Dani Reese”)
Crews: Hello ?
Reese: Hello. Crews, you there ?
Crews: Reese ? Am I talking to you ?
Reese: What do you mean are you talking to me ? You’re talkin’ to me!
Crews: But how am I talking to you ?
(Reese then tell him about a suspect they have identified.)
Reese: I’m sending you his mugshot right now.
Crews: To my house ?
Reese: To your phone !
(Phones beeps, Crews picks it up and looks at the picture.)
Crews: Wow, that’s like…
Reese: Living in the future ?
Crews: Actually, I thought about that, and, turns out there really is no future, or past neither, just now. And now. (She hangs up.) And of course now! Reese ? Reese ?

Reese: Why did you become a cop again ?
Crews: When I was doing all that time, I always thought inside me I’m still a cop, that’s what I held on to.
Reese: Wow, that sounds like a load of crap!
Crews: My life is a load of crap.

Crews: Say his name.
Tims: No I don’t think I’ll do that.
Crews: Next time I ask, you will.
(Later.)
Crews: Arthur, say his name.
Tims: John Gibney. I killed John Gibney.

Crews: (holding a cup filled with fruits) Mango ?
Reese: That’s okay.
Crews: These came all the way from Guatemala, and now they’re right here in this cup. It’s all connected, Reese.
Reese: What is ?
Crews: It is.
Reese: hmm, that’s zen.
Crews: Is it ?
Reese: That’s zen too, isn’t it ?
Crews: Is it ?
Reese: Say “is it” one more time and I’ll shoot you.

Any mistakes ? Anything missing ? Post in the forums and share your favorite quote(s) from the episode as well!

(Ted makes a presentation for Charlie about what could be his future bar.)
Ted: We’re going to bring, sexy, back to the bar scene. Our target demographic will be 18 to 29 year old, at least initially, to create buzz.
Easley: You gotta be 21 to drink.
Ted: We’re gonna serve tapas and sushi. You gotta get the young in for the dancing, the old will then follow.
Easley: I wouldn’t drink there, it’s too fancy.
Ted: Yeah. You are not our target demographic, okay? Our specialties will be coladas and daiquiris.
Easley: Sounds fruity.
Ted: You know what? Charlie happens to like fruit. — S01E04
