Quotes from Tear Asunder
And here’s a selection of quotes from Tear Asunder :
(Getting out of the car.)
Crews: But you were a little girl once.
Reese: There’s no proof of that.
Crews: Didn’t dream of a big wedding ?
(Reese shakes her head no.)
Crews: Dad walking you down the aisle ?
(Reese shakes her head no again.
Crews: Didn’t dream about who your bridesmaids would be ?
(Reese shakes her head no once more, looking exasperated. Inside the hotel room, as she stands over the bride’s dead body, covered by the dress.)
Reese: Didn’t dream about the dress, either.
Reese: How did you know there was something in that shoe ?
Crews: Because the one shoe was heavier than the other, because it sat lower on the carpet.
Reese: Oh, you expect me to believe that ?
Crews: I have no expectations as to what you will or will not believe, and whatever you did believe can’t change what was in that shoe.
Reese: Why exactly can’t you talk like a normal person ?
Crews: When exactly was the last time you actually met a normal person ?
(When Crews and Silvers dive into the pool and keep fighting underwater, Reese uses a policeman’s stun baton to electrocute the pool. Once Crews is back, she gives him his handcuffs back.)
Reese: You lost these.
Crews: Stun baton ?
Reese: 900 000 volts.
Crews: Felt like more.
(As they are interrogating Jake, his attorney comes in and tells him not to talk anymore.)
Reese: He doesn’t have to talk. We have Anna’s blood all over him. We have his assault of a police officer.
Crews: (Raises his finger.) That would be me.
(Crews takes a yellow fruit out of his desk and stares at it.)
Reese: That’s an interesting fruit.
Crews: Thank you. It’s a horned melon. Also known as a jelly melon, a kiwano, or the African horned cucumber.
Reese: African horned cucumber ?
Crews: Yeah, it’s an ornamental fruit, but you can still eat it if you want to. I thought there’d be more.
Reese: More to what ?
Crews: In the pool, with Jake. You know, when you put those volts in the water, I was almost dead.
Reese: Yeah, I remember that.
Crews: It was a near-death experience.
Reese: And it not being a full death experience should make you happy.
Crews: Nothing happened. There were no lights, no tunnel, no dead relatives. Or maybe I wasn’t near death enough for it to be a near-death experience.
Davis: Uh, that’s very funny you say Jake didn’t do it, because your partner here says the opposite. And when I say that’s funny detective, of course I mean that’s not funny.
Crews: I know, but look, over the last 12 years I’ve know more than a few men who’ve killed their wives, and I looked into Jake’s eyes, and I just didn’t see it there.
Davis: You looked into his eyes ?
Crews: They are the windows to the soul.
Davis: That’s very profound, but the LAPD believes Jake is the lead suspect and because we believe this, the city of Los Angeles requires you to get him for Anna Turners’ murder.
Crews: Anna Silvers.
Davis: What ?
Crews: She was married. She took his name. She died Anna Silvers.
Reese: I need to know if this is going to be a thing with you..
Crews: Which “this” is that ?
Reese: This thing with Jake Silvers. Are you going to go see falsely accused people everywhere ?
Crews: You think that’s not a good instinct for a cop to have ?
Reese: I just need to know if it’s gonna be a thing with you.
Crews: Shouldn’t “innocent until proven guilty” be a “thing” with all of us ? (Once the doors open, Reese, frustrated, gets off the elevator while Crews turns and smiles at the old woman in the back, before walking out still smiling.)
(Reese and Crews are interviewing the groom’s friends, Bradley and Mason, quite drunk.)
Mason: (To Reese) You’re pretty.
Bradley: Shut up, Mason. She’s a cop !
Mason: A pretty, pretty cop. (To Crews) And you, that dude! Dude, you are so thorn from the headlines !
Crews: Thanks dude!
Crews: I count four blenders. Why do people always get blenders as wedding gifts ? Maybe I’ll get my dad a blender ! He’s getting married, re-married. Maybe I’ll get him a bender, and I can write on the card “Congratulations dad, I hope you really enjoy your new blender!”
Reese: You’re doing that thing again where you’re not really talking to me.
(Crews bite into an apple as they’re walking in the hallway of the hotel.)
Crews: Lobby apple. (Reese looks at him.) What? There was a big bowl of them by the front desk. (She looks at him again.) The hotel wants you to take ‘em.
Reese: So why would a friend of the victim represent the accused ? That’s, that’s very, uh, … what’s the word, Crews ?
Crews: Enlightened!
(Crews is looking at the all the pictures from the wedding that he put on the floor and desks around.)
Reese: Crews? Crews! Are you with us?
Crews: It’s all here! Except the one thing that isn’t here.
Reese: (To a nearby person) Do you know what that means ? (Loud, for anyone in the room to hear) Does anybody know what that means ?
Tiffy: I heard voices, two voices. Anna…, and my brother Bradley.
Bradley: You better shut your mouth!
Crews: That’s one, Bradley.
Bradley: One what ?
(Crews looks at him, stays silent.)
Reese: You heard voices ?
Tiffy: They’re in the living room, arguing. Anna and Bradley. Bradley was drunk, real drunk, like he gets, mean, he gets…
Bradley: Don’t say one more word!
Crews: That’s two Bradley, you don’t want it to get to three, understand ?
Tiffy: It was crazy. Anna was naked, she must have got woken up or something. Bradley was trying to steal that money, that stupid purse full of money, and she caught him. You were so drunk.
Reese: And then what happened ?
Tiffy: Anna told him he was nothing, her voice was so soft that I thought everything was gonna be okay.
Crews: (Starring at Bradley.) But it wasn’t okay.
Tiffy: It happens so fast! Bradley grabbed her by the neck, and pushed her against the wall, so hard. I didn’t know what to do, I looked down, I had the camera in my hand. I took the picture, of him standing over her. I saw it.
(Bradley tries to get to her, but Crews gets in his way and puts him to the ground.)
Crews: That was three, Bradley. Didn’t I tell you you didn’t want to get to three ?
Tiffy: He smashed the camera, he said I didn’t see anything but I did, I saw what he did to Anna.
Crews go to the shooting range, and plays this as he shots :
“Chapter 7, on revenge. Revenge is a poison meant for others that we end up swallowing ourselves. Vengeance is a dark light that blinds all who seek it. The untroubled soul knows there is no justice in revenge. The untroubled soul knows that to seek vengeance is to seek destruction.”
