Quotes from What They Saw

Alright, here we go again, with quotes from What They Saw :

(Crews is investigating into the woods, sees someone up in a tree.)
Crews: LAPD, show me your hands !
(Easley throws stuff at him.)
Crews: Hey! Cannot see the gun ?
(He keeps throwing stuff at him.)
Crews: What you got up there, CostCo ?? Cut it out! Now get down here or I’m coming up after you…
(He climbs higher in the tree.)
Crews: Oh please… (As Crews jumps into the tree:) I just bought this suit!
(After getting him down there, Crews puts handcuff on him as Reese and other cops arrive on scene.)
Crews: Don’t throw stuff at the LAPD. You’re lucky I’m enlightened!
Reese: Well I’m not as enlightened as my partner! (Pushes Easley against the tree.)
Crews: He was hiding down here. I identified myself, he threw a toaster at me !
Reese: Throwing toasters at the LAPD is bad. Makes you look like you’re guilty of something. Are you? Got anything in your pockets that’ll stick me ? (She searches his pockets and finds the victim’s wedding ring.) Look at this! You got a dead man’s wedding ring in your pocket, did you know that ? You’re under arrest for the murder of Len Sands. Take him away.
Crews: You just called me your partner.
Reese: When ?
Crews: Just now.
Reese: No, I didn’t.
Crews: Yeah, you did.
Reese: No! I never said that.
Crews: (Turns to a cop nearby:) You heard her, didn’t you?

(Reese and Crews are interrogating Easley. Reese talks, Easley stays silent. When Crews starts scratching his back, he suddenly shouts:)
Easley: Baby powder! For the poison ivy you’ve got. You ran through it on the hill. I know to avoid it, but you must’ve not seen it. Really’d like to get out of here, I don’t like it inside so much.
Crews: Can’t breathe in here ?
Easley: Yeah that’s right, how did you know ?
Reese: Why are you shouting ?
Easley: Am I !? It’s been so long since I talk to anybody, my voice…
Crews: (Cuts him:) ..sounds weird.
Easley: Yeah that’s right!
Crews: Like someone else, whispering into your hear ?
Easley: How did you know ?
Crews: (Smiles.) What’s your name ?
Easley: Holt Easley. And I’m 61 years old.
Reese: You’ve ever been arrested ?
Easley: Not for nothing like murder. I don’t think I ever even picked up a felony…
Reese: Alright, why were you in the backyard ?
Easley: I live there. It’s better than shelters. I never been in the house though!
Reese: How come you had the victim’s ring in your pocket ?
Easley: I found it! I did, I swear. Swear to God !
Crews: What were you trying to get away from ?
Easley: If I say, can I go ?
Reese: No!
Easley: Can I get a drink ?
Reese: No! But if you confess, we won’t charge you with murder one, or for assaulting Detective Crews.
Crews: Or for stealing Detective Reese’s pen.
(Reese starts looking for her pen, realizing it is missing. Easley gets up, takes it out from his pants and gives it back.)

(Walking away from the interrogation room, Reese holds out her pen by only a couple of fingers, handing it to Crews.)
Reese: Here. Take it. (Crews takes the pen.) Anything that goes down his pants, you keep.
Crews: So what do you think ?
Reese: Well, I think he’s lying. I know he’s a drunk and a thief.
Crews: Or a non-conformist, a Western archetype, cowboy on the range…
Reese: You actually believe the crap you say ?
Crews: It’s not important what I believe. It’s important what he believes. You give a flower sun, it opens up. You give a man respect, same thing.
Reese: You think you’re working him ? He’s working you. Drunks are great at telling you what you want to hear. (Walks in the elevator.) Now you think he’s innocent.

(Crews walks in Constance’s office. A man is sitting in one of the chair, recognizes him.)
Cudahy: Crews, isn’t it ? Yeah… I’m Neil Cudahy. You’re the reason I’m sitting here.
Crews: Is that right ?
Cudahy: Yeah when I saw on TV that Constance Griffiths got you out, I said, that girl’s gotta be my lawyer.
Crews: Is that right ?
Cudahy: Charged with assaulting a man I don’t even know. Can you believe that ? And the sweetest part is, I don’t even have to pay, she, she’s doing me pro-bono. Did she do you pro-bono too ?
(Constance walks in.)
Constance: Charlie ? What are you doing here ?
Crews: We have an appointment.
Constance: Yes, we do, Charlie. Later today.
Crews: I can’t really figure out this calendar ! (Throws his PDA to the trash.)

Easley: But I can tell you this: what seems, isn’t always what is, especially with rich people. (Crews smiles.)

(Crews and Reese are interrogating the sheriff.)
Reese: You’re not real bright, are you Mr Smith ?
Sheriff: About average I guess, why ?
Crews: Is there a reason you ignored the alarm ? And the call from the neighbor about a scream ?
Sheriff: I didn’t like going by the Sand place. Made me kinda sick.
Reese: Cause they’re gay ?
Sheriff: No cause I’m lazy. Are we done ?

As Reese and Crews are interrogating a rich couple who starts fighting, Reese turns over to say to Crews: All rich people are crazy, it’s not just you.

After talking to a witness, Crews and Reese exchange some banter.
Crews: Look, if we solve this fast, we won’t have to book Easley.
Reese: Why do you care ?
Crews: Well, I like the guy. If I was a cowboy, he’d be my goofy sidekick.
Reese: Huh… Kinda like you’re mine!

(Reese and Crews are filling out paper to book Easley and hand him over to prison guards. Crews tries to get Easley to tell him something that would prove he’s telling the truth.)
Crews: The window. There’s a man with a gun. Do you see it, Easley ? Look at it hard.
Easley: I told you, it’s James. Shooting the gun.
Crews: Tell me everything you see.
Easley: James is pissed off. He’s got the gun. What do you want !?
Crews: What is he wearing ?
Easley: A tie. And a suit I guess. And gloves, he’s got gloves on.
Reese: Wow! You told him to say that ?
Crews: No! I didn’t, I swear! (To Easley:) Smith wore gloves, gloves like those ?
Easley: No they were different.
(The guards come and take Easley away.)
Crews: (To Reese:) The coroner’s report backs his story. He saw what happened. That’s how he knows about the gloves.
Reese: Or, he knows about them because he’s the killer.
Crews: Look at him! He looks like someone who shot a guy to death ? If so, let’s book him. If not…
Easley: (Yells for Crews:) Boss! Please, don’t make me go!
Crews: (To Easley:) Hey, nobody’s taking you anywhere, I promise.
Reese: Alright, alright, alright, alright. (To the guards:) Thanks. Thank you. He’s ready, you know ? We got him. He, uh, we’ll take him to the DA now, so, thanks a lot. (To Crews:) C’mon. (To the perplexed guards:) What? You never saw a bluff?

(In the car, Reese is driving, Easley in the back.)
Easley: I’m kinda hungry.
Reese: Tough!
Crews: I could eat something.
Reese: What did I just say ?
Easley: Can we get burgers ?
Crews: I could go for a burger.
Reese: No!
Crews: We gotta eat.
Easley: Tacos ?
Crews: I could go for tacos.
(Reese hits the brakes.)
Reese: That’s it! If either of you says another thing, about food, or about anything, I’m gonna turn this car right back around, and I’m taking him to jail. (sniffs) What’s that smell?
Easley: That’s humanity, baby.
(Reese opens her car window…)

(Crews and Easley are in Constance’s office, she walks in.)
Crews: This is the right time, isn’t it?
Constance: Yes but, who’s your friend ?
(Crews gets up and takes candy from Easley.)
Crews: Easley, if you’re hungry there’s fruits in the kitchen.
(Crews walks towards Constance, softly saying to her hear:)
Crews: I think he’s a witness. Although there’s a chance he’s the killer.
Constance: Why is he here ?
Crews: I figured if he’s guilty you get a new client, if he’s innocent you get a new cause.

Ted: A liquor license is hard to get. That’s a valuable asset, Charlie.
(Easley steals food from Ted’s plate.)
Ted: Hey, excuse me? This is my plate. That’s your plate, there.
Easley: You weren’t eating!
Ted: Well, because I was talking.
Easley: (To Crews:) Can I work in your bar, boss ?
Ted: Okay, you know what ? Here. (Gives him his plate.) You eat while the adults talk, okay? (To Charlie:) I can ran it for you Charlie, I would love, to run a bar.
Crews: The last time I ran a bar, my partner ended up dead.
Ted: Well what are the odds of that happening twice ?
Easley: That lady lawyer says he steals, boss. I heard her.
(Ted grabs a sandwich from Easley’s hand and walks away with it.)

(Reese and Crews are eating at the same place he, Ted and Easley ate before. At one point Reese looks up as Ted and Easley walk up to their table.)
Reese: Who are you ?
Ted: I’m Charlie’s roommate.
Easley: No, I’m Charlie’s roommate.
Reese: Easley’s staying at your house ?
Ted: Yes, and he’s been touching my stuff, Charlie. I think he used my toothbrush.
Easley: Did not! Smell my breath. I ain’t even close to minty. If I’d used your toothbrush, I’d be minty. I ain’t the kind of guy who uses another guy’s toothbrush.

(Ted makes a presentation for Charlie about what could be his future bar.)
Ted: We’re going to bring, sexy, back to the bar scene. Our target demographic will be 18 to 29 year old, at least initially, to create buzz.
Easley: You gotta be 21 to drink.
Ted: We’re gonna serve tapas and sushi. You gotta get the young in for the dancing, the old will then follow.
Easley: I wouldn’t drink there, it’s too fancy.
Ted: Yeah. You are not our target demographic, okay? Our specialties will be coladas and daiquiris.
Easley: Sounds fruity.
Ted: You know what? Charlie happens to like fruit.

Easley: You oughta grow more trees outside, boss. Give you privacy. Nobody’ll see when you kill Ted.

Easley sits on a bench outside the courtroom, nervous.
Reese: (Sees Easley) Oh, Crews, he’s not gonna make it. (She walks over to a trash can, pours the coffee she was drinking into it and replaces it with the alcohol she happened to have on her. She comes back and gives the cup to Easley.)
Crews: Witness prep?
Reese: If we don’t indict now, James is gone. You want Easley’s testimony or not ?
Easley: (Drinks.) I feel better, boss.
(Reese receives a call on her cell.)
Crews: What?
Easley: What?
Reese: Your new friend here, said he’d never been in Sands’ house ?
(Crews nods.)
Reese: Labs came back. His DNA was all over it. (To Easley:) You’re not going to the grand jury, you’re going to jail.

Reese: Crews, Easley’s DNA is in the house ! How do we explain that ?
(Crews sees the booking photo of Easley, all smiling, his teeth visible. Crews walks up to take a closer look.)
Crews: He’s got a nice smile.
Reese: I’m… not sure I know what you mean by that.
Crews: Well, for a guy who lives in the woods, he’s got a nice smile. Ted said he used his toothbrush. You know, I think he was minty !

Crews: James and Stephanie put that stuff there hoping we’d find it and blame Drew. They didn’t count on Easley taking it and burying it.
Reese: But how do we prove it? The frame worked. Drew looks guilty.
Crews: Well, we know that. We know James and Stephanie know that. They don’t know we know. What they do know is that if we found the bag, we’d focus on Drew. So they’d then know what to say when we come.
Reese: And, so… I’m, I’m not hearing a plan.
Crews: Well, let’s see if they embrace not knowing what they don’t know.

(Easley gets out of jail, and Reese and Crews are here to walk him out. Crews offers him to stay at his house for a while.)
Reese: That way he can use the bathroom when he wants to without committing a felony.
Crews: Well, a man’s got to stay minty. Isn’t that right, Easley?
Easley: That’s right. (He suddenly breathes out in Reese’s face, making her stop walking in shock and disgust.) See? Minty.

Crews: Poor Easley! I thought telling the truth would set him free.
Ted: Tss, when has that ever worked ?

As always, feel free to add/correct anything I missed!

(Charlie bites into a pear.) Aw, mushy! (Spits and throw away the bites into another one.) That’s the one. Green anjou! You know some people are allergic to pears ? Gives them a rash. Not me though… (Takes another bite) — S01E01
