TV Guide: Your character on LIFE, cop Dani Reese, is looking pretty hot this season. Did she get a makeover?

Damian Lewis, Sarah Shahi & Rand Ravich on NBC’s ‘Life’

By Christina Radish

The NBC drama Life, from executive producers Rand Ravich and Far Shariat, focuses on a detective who is given a second chance. Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) returns to the force after serving 12 years in prison for murders he didn’t commit. With a Zen-like outlook, peace of mind and no need for vengeance, Crews is focused on investigating the mystery surrounding the crime he was falsely accused of. Surrounding the complex, offbeat Crews are his skeptical partner, Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi), Officer Bobby Stark (Brent Sexton), Captain Kevin Tidwell (Donal Logue) and former cellmate Ted Earley (Adam Arkin).

Co-stars Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi, along with Ravich, spoke to MediaBlvd Magazine about what fans of the series can expect from Season 2.

TV Guide talks Fridays, mentions LIFE

TV GUIDE is looking at the new fall schedule and when Fridays come, there’s a nice mention and highlight on our very own LIFE, of course. While I’m not really liking how they say the show “failed” to get lots of viewers - because while true, it did as well as NBC “hit” CHUCK and in the end better than its lead-in BIONIC WOMAN - and thus is getting a second chance, even though, sadly, that might be the case, this is a very nice article.

Here’s a great scan of said article, credits to ladybluelake, and the transcript below (Warning: the picture is right below, but the article contains spoilers so if you don’t want to know nothing, focus on Sarah, Damian or Adam, but don’t let your eyes on the text!) :

Review of LIFE Season One DVDs

Here’s a nice review of the upcoming DVDs of the first season of LIFE by Chris Ball on Cleveland.com There’s never any mention about the music selection, but I wonder if people who review those DVDs are even aware of that fact, probably not. Sucks, not just because I think we deserve to know, but because the original music selection was so much better and made scenes so much more powerful, than it’s really not the same to watch either version.

Anyways, nice review, sadly it looks like what was liked then won’t be next season, I’m thinking of this for example : “Shahi exudes a powerful sexuality, which LIFE manages to utilize without seeming too obvious.” Yes, that was another good thing on the show, but seems NBC decided to make more obvious, I guess those guys are either blind, stupid, or both. My guess is both.

USA TODAY talks about LIFE

A nice article from USA TODAY about LIFE and the challenges ahead of the show for its sophomore season, after a shortened season cut in the middle by the writers’ strike.

NBC’s LIFE is revived; but question is, can it thrive?
By Gary Strauss, USA TODAY

In life, one seldom gets a second chance. That’s the premise behind NBC’s LIFE, the cop drama that gets a second chance of sorts when its new season opens Sept. 29 (10 ET/PT).

NBC is giving viewers ample opportunity to sample the series after the writers’ strike cut its freshman run to 11 episodes. Three more shows air on Oct. 3, 6 and 10, when it rests in its Friday slot.

“NBC understands the difficulty of selling this show,” says creator Rand Ravich. “The first episode needs to serve as a pilot, as if you’ve never seen it.”

Indeed, new viewers may need a refresher course on the characters and complex back stories. British actor Damian Lewis (BAND OF BROTHERS) stars as Charlie Crews, an L.A. cop who is back on the force after serving 12 years for homicides he has been cleared of, and he’s tracking the conspirators who framed him. Crews emerges from prison as a Zen disciple, challenged by modern conveniences and partial to fast driving and fresh fruit.

Variety about the importance of music in LIFE

Call it irony I guess, but soon after we confirmed that the DVDs for the first season of LIFE would not feature the original music selection but some replacements NBC felt more appropriate (read: were cheaper to use), comes an interesting piece in VARIETY about what? The importance of music and how it is used to tell stories and advance plots in shows like our very own LIFE !

This article reinforces one more time how despicable this whole thing is, and how much it hurts the show. Because on more than once occasion, the music on LIFE isn’t just a background noise, it’s so much more, it’s been carefully selected to make us feel a certain way, to convey certain feelings, to create a special atmosphere, and to replace those songs by others is simply to rewrite part of the episodes, it’s like NBC re-shot scenes to use a different actor because it was cheaper that way… disgusting is what it is.

Back on the music…

Life joins New York Television Festival’s Premiere Week

New Yorkers are in for a treat this coming September, The New York Television Festival (NYTVF) announced its line-up for its third annual Premiere Week featuring special screenings of new and returning shows this fall. Participating network partners are ABC, FOX, CBS, Media Rights Capital (MRC), The CW, NBC and HBO. The Premiere Week will start on September 12 to 17 at the New World Stages in Midtown Manhattan.

NBC’s Life will be one of the participating shows in the Premiere Week.

Monday, September 15, 8 PM: NBC’s “Life”

On Monday, September 15th, the NYTVF offers a special sneak-peek fan screening of the premiere episode of the sophomore police drama, “Life.” Tickets to this event are free and open to the public. “The second season of “Life” premieres Monday, September 29th on NBC before moving to its new timeslot on Fridays at 10 PM ET.

“Life,” from Rand Ravich (”The Astronaut’s Wife”) and Far Shariat (”Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”), focuses on a detective who is given a second chance. Golden Globe nominee Damian Lewis (”Band of Brothers”) plays complex, offbeat Detective Charlie Crews, who returns to the force after serving time in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Crews’ new lease on life has provided him with a Zen-like outlook, peace of mind and no need for vengeance, an attitude which can be challenging to maintain when someone he cares about is threatened — or when he is investigating the mystery surrounding the murder he was falsely accused of.

Worries about LIFE

We’re not the only ones to worry about the future of the show and the way NBC is dealing with it. First, the folks over at TV Squad are wondering what the four episodes in two weeks is really all about… is is really a sign of faith in the show, to give it a chance, or just to get ride of it quickly ?

Airing the show on two consecutive Mondays can mean a few things. One, NBC really does have faith in the show and wants people to know about it so they will tune in on Fridays. Two, they are testing the waters just in case MY OWN WORST ENEMY fails miserably. Three, they’re burning off as many episodes as they can to free up the space for another show. My hopes are with items one and two.

Also, looking over all that’s wrong with NBC lately, the TVoholic is worried about NBC messing up LIFE as well after seeing the new season 2 promo

LIFE will have another series premiere, sort of

It’s no mystery that the last episode of LIFE seen on NBC happened back in 2007, and with the second season premiere not planned before October this year, it will be awful long time between two episodes. I know this, you know this, and that’s why we want reruns!

Of course, with the recent announcement that NBC will air LIFE twice a week for two weeks at first, including on Monday nights right after hit-drama HEROES, there’s hope NBC is aware of it too and plans on making sure everyone knows about LIFE and remembers to tune in.

As for the creative mind behind the show, creator Rand Ravich had already said season 2 would be accessible to new viewers, that they wouldn’t feel as if they were missing out on important things required to understand everything - even though they obviously will.

And in a recent piece called “Sepinwall on TV: The re-freshman class of ‘08” Alan Sepinwall looked at this unusual situation for most freshmen series returning for their sophomore season without having a full first season, and such a long break between the two. Among the people he talked to was our very own Rand Ravich :

Maldito: Yo, don’t you look at my ride !
Minion: Do not look at his ride !
Maldito: You cannot handle my ride.

Maldito: That was pimped, that!

Maldito: You don’t want that. Man track you like a dog with GPS.
Maldito’s buddy: Like a dog.
Crews: Yeah, yeah, you’re right, I don’t want that. Man will track me with that.
Reese: Crews, you are the man !
